Vuelta a Espana update: Froome continues to extend his lead while Lopes wins today’s 11th stage

It is official; Britain’s champion Chris Froome has extended his lead to this season’s Vuelta a Espana Tour once again in the today’s stage.

Froome, 32, is now closer than ever to winning this season Spain’s Grand Tour and become the third man to have ever won the Vuelta and Tour de France at the same year.

The four-time Tour de France champion was only 14 seconds behind stage 11 winner, Colombia’s rider Muguel Angel Lopez who was able to claim a clean, solo victory in Searra Nevada in Andalucia.

Third place went to Italian Vincenzo Nibali who is now moved to the second place in the general standings.

“I’m very happy with the outcome today. I think it was a very selective day for the general classification, and to finish second, I couldn’t have asked for more than that other than a stage victory”, Froome said.

“When Lopez went, he was extremely strong and at the top, I figured for me the most important thing was going to be to follow Vincenzo and to stay with the real favorites.”

Tomorrow’s stage 12 is expected to start in the Sierra Nevada and it will see riders go through a 160.1km route from Motril to Antequera.
