UCI Road Race Championships: Peter Sagan takes historic third straight title

Peter Sagan UCI world title

Slovakian Peter Sagan is officially the first cyclist to ever win three consecutive titles in the World Championships Road race!  His brilliant yet intensive performance in Bergen gave the rider the victory once again as he went wheel-to-wheel with Norwegian rider, Alexander Kristoff.

Eventually, the Slovakian rider defended his position by denying the victory to Katusha cyclist in a slightly reduced bunch of sprint in front of his home admires in just a matter of centimeters sealing the world title once again.

Previously, Sagan won the world title while competing in the US city; Richmond, in 2015. After the first title, he went and defended it once again in another intense sprint in Doha in the previous season. With this season’s title, he is now the fifth man to have ever won the World Championships road race title three times.

“It was not easy; guys were changing in the front all the time. I tried to go with the breakaway and it came down to a sprint, it was unbelievable.” – Sagan said.

“Kristoff was racing at home so I’m sorry, but of course I’m happy to win. Three in a row is something special for sure. For me it’s something very nice.”

Ben Swift, who took fifth place right after being part of a late break attempt, said:

“Sagan was incredible, I think all of us were trying a couple of moves because it was all over the place, but he did amazing. The team was brilliant today, we set out what we wanted to do and everyone rode brilliantly.”
