Tour of Britain 2017: Boom wins time trial and takes the leader’s green jersey

Lars Boom

2017 Energy OVO Tour of Britain: Lotto NL Jumbor’s rider, Lars Boom, has won the individual time trial on day five of the tour and has officially claimed the leader’s green jersey.

He is now leading the overall classification by completing the Thursday’s 16-kilometer stage in only 19 minutes and 2 seconds. He was able to finish it around six seconds faster than Belgian rider Victor Campenaerts while in the overall standings, Boom leads his team-mate by 8 seconds.

On the other hand, Britain’s Geraint Thomas took the eighth place moving to the ninth overall classification.

With only three stages remaining, it seems Team Sky’s Welsh cyclist’s performance has placed him on top of other Britons along with Englishman, Movistar’s rider, Alex Dowsett, in 10th place.

Boom admitted yesterday’s result to be great. He added:  “Really happy with the win and the lead in the general classification (GC). I’m really happy.

“We have to see if I can hang on to the jersey. First we’re going to celebrate tonight with a beer at dinner! The focus now is to win the GC in Cardiff on Sunday.”

Today, on stage six, the riders are heading to Suffolk to perform the 187-kilometer route from Newmarket to Aldeburgh.
