Tom Boonen has become part of the group of cyclists and other public figures of the sport that have given an open opinion about the four time Tour de France winner Chris Froome’s salbutamol case.
Boonen said Froome’s case is “not good for anything” and according to the Belgian, Foome “is in the history books, be it a good or bad” thing.
A small incident
According to him, even though Froome’s adverse analytical finding during the 2017 Vuelta a Espana indicated twice the permitted amount of the prohibited drug, it still “doesn’t let you win the Vuelta or the Tour de France”.
“Everybody has an opinion on Froome. Everybody was waiting for something to happen. Then this happens. It’s a small incident, really, I think but I haven’t been following it closely,” Boonen said to Sporza.
“You can say what you want but it doesn’t let you win the Vuelta or the Tour de France. They were all waiting for a stick to beat. Sky was the team with a certain image and that creates envy. Then this came. It’s a road without an end. It’s not good for anything.”
The champion made his first debut of 2018 at the Ruta del Sol earlier this month thanking his fellow riders for the showed support despite the fact both Belgian’s Oliver Naesen and Tim Wellens were openly critical of his presence in the event saying that he should at least wait until the investigation comes to an end before hitting the road again.
