Simon Yates retains Giro’s Pink Jersey as Dennis wins stage 16

Britain’s Simon Yates continues to keep the Giro d’Italia’s pink jersey even after losing yesterday’s stage 16 victory only seconds behind winner Rohan Dennis.

Yates, 25, risked nothing on defending champion Dumoulin who continues to be 56 seconds behind him while going into the final, most important week of the Grand Tour.

It seems the followed plan left Mitchelton-Scoot rider happy, saying that even though he was placed in 22nd position, the 34.2km stage which started from Trento and ended in Rovereto was a good one indeed.

“I’m very happy even if I have to be careful in the stages to come,” Yates said.

Froome’s great day

On the other hand, four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome had also a great day moving to fourth place in the general classification after finishing the 16th stage in fifth position, only 35 seconds behind the Australian rider.

“I think it’s all to race for. Simon has been untouchable so far, so it will be interesting to see how he goes after the time-trial and he goes in this last block, but I can’t see anyone taking that jersey off his shoulders,” Froome said right after yesterday’s stage.

“Still a lot could happen in this race. The parcours leads to some very aggressive racing, so let’s see.”
