Australian cycling is in total shock after hearing the devastating news of the tragic death of one of its brightest, most talented young cycling stars, Jason Lowndes who passed away after being hit by a passing vehicle while riding near Bendigo.
We are devastated to learn of the passing of Jason Lowndes this morning. The peloton has lost a friend, a teammate and a family member. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
Rest in peace.

Can not believe it… so saddened by the loss of Jason today. Here just 1 year ago after helping my friend in the world championships, a day I won’t forget. My thoughts are with his family #RIP #neverforgotten pic.twitter.com/60nHoeEzLQ

A lost talent
Pro rider, Lowndes, had just turned 23 a week ago and everyone was convinced he was going to be record breaker in the near future. The young talent who was able to finish sixth in the under-23 road race at 2016’s UCI world championships, was known to be an emerging sprinter who had also raced for the Australian-registered Drapac Professional Cycling team.
He spent the last season in the Israel Cycling Academy right before signing with JLT-Condor, British Continental team for 2018.
I can’t believe it. Too hard to comprehend. A life taken in an instant. So bubbly, so positive, such a nice guy. Sending love to all who had the pleasure to know @jasonlowndes94 xxx? #ametrematters #sharetheroad pic.twitter.com/Mrr4W5hYKh

Even though, the young driver, a 20-year old woman who was coming from Kangaroo Flat, immediately stopped at the scene to give the first help and call the police, there was nothing doctors and anyone else could do to save the talented rider…
Shed a tear for the first time in a long while, we lost a great bloke today. If we could all live with 1/10th of the joy and enthusiasm Lowndsey did this world would be a better place. RIP friend. https://t.co/2pPYfa59hu

Absolutely devastated. This shouldn’t happen. Today the world lost one of the most genuine, laid-back and happy people. Lowndesy, you were a great mate and teammate, and I’m so glad we got to touch base and catch up last weekend. Rest in peace brother. #LOGon pic.twitter.com/W8DZywI4ni
