Kristina Vogel, two-times Olympic champion, has just undergone a delicate and risky operation earlier today after getting involved in an horrifying accident on Tuesday, June 26th.
According to the German Cycling Federation, the champion collided with another rider (male) in a velodrome while in Cottbus.
Airlifted to Berlin
According to Patrick Moster, the Federation’s CEO, Kristina Vogel, 27, had been airlifted to a more specialized hospital in Berlin soon after the accident for a more intensive and professional care.
Tuesday’s accident marks her second one after getting seriously injured in 2009 after colliding with a passing vehicle. The then-accident left her in coma for two full days.
“We are all shocked by what has happened to Kristina, an outstanding champion and an ambassador for the discipline, for women in sport and for German cycling,” the UCI head David Lappartient said.
“Over and above her talent and her fighting spirit, her jovial character and vitality means she is an athlete that is liked and respected by all.
“Our thoughts are with her and we extend our support to her in these difficult moments. We are convinced that the qualities that have made her a champion will help her face up to this ordeal with strength and determination.”
