The defending champion has officially abandoned Tour de Suisse after getting involved into a crash that left him with several injuries.

The crash forced the Astana’s rider Miguel Lopez, to abandon the Tour de Suisse in the middle. Earlier this week, when Tour de Suisse took off, the defending champion was trying hard to get back in track after spending a whole winter and spring recovering from a broken tibia.

Yesterday, Lopes found himself again trying to recover from injuries leaving his second debut this year in the middle.

How it happened?

When Lopez suddenly lost control and hit the deck on the descent from the Siomplon Pass, he had another 70-kilometre ride left to finish the stage. Even though he tried hard to continue the race, was unable to do so. Paramedics sent him to the hospital for evaluation.

According to Astana’s declaration, the Colombian 2016 overall Tour de Suisse winner, 23, was then diagnosed with a fractured thumb and sustained abrasions and required some stitches.

Last year, a lingering leg injurie left Lopez out from every competition until last month. He got the leg injurie in a crash while training last autumn.

He also missed the scheduled Tour of California and now, his build-up process has been delayed for his Tour de France participation.
