On Saturday, all cameras witnessed and captured a horror crash that involved several riders participating in Il Lombardia. But no one knew this would only be the first crash of the day. It involved Belgian rider, Laurens De Plus. Soon after his fall, three other riders crashed at the same exact descent.
According to the race’s official medical report, UAE Team Emirates rider, Simone Petilli, Danial Martinez (Willier Triestina) and Jan Bakelants (AG2R La Mondiale) were the ones who received the most serious injuries on the accident.
The most affected by the crash
Belgium rider, Jan Bakelants, seemed to be the most affected one by the second horrifying crash. He suffered fractured ribs as well as fractured vertebrae.
Team doctor Eric Bouvat said, “After an x-ray and CT scan, the following injuries have been detected: Seven rib fractures, though without any impact on the lungs. A compression-fracture of the first lumbar vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra, the latter of which will require additional examination.”
Meanwhile, Petilli is under observation at a local hospital in Varese. According to his team, the rider, 24, suffered a fracture of his right occipital condyle. This is a serious fracture inside the neck that can be fatal if not treated in time. The rider also suffered from a fracture of the right transverse process of the D1 vertebra, a broken right shoulder blade and also a broken right collarbone.
