March 2018: Dutchman ready to make his first appearance since Paris-Nice 2017 withdrawal when he had to undergo a heart surgery for cardiac arrhythmia.
It seems LottoNL-Jumbo’s man has joined his team after a long time and is now feeling in his best physical shape and is ready to race at this season’s Volta Limburg Classic which is set to take place this week on Saturday.
It seems Boom’s main goal is to test his heart and that is why he trying to keep his expectations low until feeling completely ready to undertake a more challenging race.
“I’m happy that I can race again. The most important thing in this race is to see what my heart rate will do. I’m in shape. But during extreme efforts, my heart doesn’t reach the heart rate it should. I hope this race will provide the right peak,” Boom said.
“That’s a good thing for me. Last month, I trained uphill a lot during my high altitude training camp. I want to race freely and see how it will go,” he said.
The perfect race to evaluate his physical condition
Once the 197.5km race which starts in Eijsden, comes to an end, the team will then assess Boom’s performance to better determine his upcoming race schedule and see whether he is able to make a return to this year’s Tour de France in July.
“I’m not going to look at my heart rate meter. We’ll analyze the data after the race. It’s good to start in a non-World Tour race first. From there we’ll see what the plan will be for the upcoming weeks,” Boom added.
