Breaking: Great Ocean Road Race, McCarthy wins in an impressive finale

McCarthy wins this year’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in a trilling finale as both Viviani and Impey make it to the podium with some impressive performances.

This season’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race was for sure one of the most intense cycling events of 2018 so far.  It saw Bora-Hansgrohe’s Jay McCarthy to place himself in a reduced bunch sprint which eventually gave him his most important and biggest win of his career so far after claiming silver in the Australian nationals earlier this month.

“I was a little a bit disappointed at Tour Down Under but I know I gave it everything there and I felt like I deserved more out of it. Coming into today as the last race in the Australian summer, I felt like I have had a pretty consistent time here and, to finish with a win, I couldn’t ask for much more,” McCarthy, said.

“As you see, Viviani was coming in hot onto my heels in the final there,” he added. “It all worked out today. Some days it goes your way and today was my day.”

Both Elia Viviani from Quick-Step Floors and Tour Down Under champion,  Mitchelton-Scott’s Daryl Impey, took second and third respectively making McCarthy the first Australian rider to win the competition.
