Dan Martin was one of the riders who got involved in one of the Tour de France incidents a couple of weeks ago. He ended up with apparently some small fractures. Now, after undergoing a scan, it seems his condition is much worse that we all thought.
Irishman who was able to finish the Tour de France in the sixth overall place, has now found out that he has raced the 12 last stages with two big fractures on his vertebrae. Martin, 30, was unaware of his injuries that came after the stage nine’s crash believing he only got some manageable and small injuries.
Diagnosis of 2 small fracture took me by surprise. Shows how powerful the mind is in pushing through. No wonder I couldn’t stand up straight https://t.co/lODIGlLueF

Now, Quick Step Floor’s rider has to rest so his L2 and L3 vertebrae can fully recover. He will miss the Clasica San Sebastian and will undergo a special treatment for three whole weeks.
Unaware of his condition
In an interview, when asked about his condition and how it unfolded, Martin said: “During the Tour I didn’t have any problems when racing, but off the bike I wasn’t feeling very comfortable, so this week I did a scan and got the news”.
Just a 6th place in the @LeTour GC with 2 fractures in his back. No biggy. ?

Martin admitted to feel bad about the fact he won’t be able to participate in San Sebastian’s Tour. Especially considering the fact he was both mentally and physically prepared for it.
“In order to tackle my future goals in good condition, it’s better to take a break and give the fracture time to heal. There’s nothing else I can do, just rest and then build up for the final part of the season”- Martin added.
