Geraint Thomas withdraws from Giro d’Italia after injuries on Sunday

Geraint Thomas

Geraint Thomas has officially abandoned the Giro d’Italia race due to several injuries sustained during a crash back on Sunday. A policemen motorbike was the cause of his crash which involved other riders as well when on the way to the Blockhaus.

Team Sky members were the ones to give the announcement of the end of Thomas race this year. Thomas was able to finish second in stage 10, time trial back on Tuesday, but, it seems he didn’t see himself continuing the race injured and with not much hope to get the victory. He is now focusing on being fit and healthy while preparing for the next Tour in France.

The Welshman got the 15th place in the general classification of Giro d’Italia. “I’ve been suffering since my crash on Sunday. I’ve had an issue with my shoulder which is manageable, but my knee has also been getting worse each day”- Geraint Thomas said in an interview back on Friday.

Leaving the race early…

He also admitted that feels bad and that he knows it’s not nice to leave a race early, especially when this race has been his main goal for this year’s season. Looking at a bigger picture, Thomas admitted that trying to survive each day rather than giving his best while racing, is not worth it.

“I’ll turn my attention to the Tour now, and I want to arrive there with as good form as I started the Giro. I want to thank all the staff and riders here” – Thomas added. It’s been great fun and I wish them all the best for the remainder of the Giro. I’ve really enjoyed racing in Italy again. The fans have been amazing and I’ll be back.”
