TIMELINE

Race Day: June 24, 2023

5:30am - Spectators Info:

Shuttle service begins for spectating friends and family from Francis fairgrounds (2317 South Spring Hollow Road Francis, Utah) to Rock Cliff State Park at Jordanelle.   There are 4 shuttle vans working the venue this year.

Tell your spectators to arrive early as we will stop shuttle service at 7:30am in order to start the race on time.   Even if you are participating in the Sprint Distance, your friends and family need to catch the shuttle and be in the park by 7:30am.

Do NOT park at the entrance of Rock Cliff, OR on the highway. You will be towed.

HELPFUL HINTS:  The 2.5 mile bike ride to the event venue is an easy downhill cruise.  However, in early hours it is dark.  Be sure to do two things to ensure a happy ride to the venue:

1) Bring a headlamp

2) Stow your gear securely in a tri-specific backpack or a backpack large enough for all your gear.   Duffle bags don't work well.

DO NOT DRIVE INTO THE VENUE TO DROP ATHLETES OFF. THIS WILL DELAY THE START and you will feel the wrath and emotional turmoil of frustrated athletes wanting to start on time!

6:00-7:00am

Race Day Packet Pick-Up

We will have limited packet pick up on race morning at the start line/transistion area. Please plan on arriving early to avoid lines.*  Better yet, please plan on attending packet pick-up at Wasatch Running Center on Thursday prior to race day to avoid a late start.

PLEASE remember that USA Triathlon REQUIRES that you must show photo ID at packet pickup.

NOTE: Race Day packet pickup will close for both Intermediate and Sprint athletes at 7am sharp.

4) Swim cap.  Color coordinated for your start time

SWIM CAP COLORS:

IMPORTANT RACE DETAILS

PARKING

Everyone will need to park at the Francis Fairgrounds at 2317 South Spring Hollow Road Francis, Utah 84036. Please note. this address is to the Francis City Hall, the fairgrounds is right behind it. This means all athletes will ride their bikes to the race venue (an easy downhill ~2.5 mile bike ride.) Consider this an opportunity to raise your heart rate before the swim!

Parking WILL NOT be allowed at or inside the Rock Cliff area. The Utah Highway Patrol and Wasatch County Sheriff will be present and ready to ticket and/or tow anyone that even looks like they are going to try and park along Hwy 32. Don’t do it.

SPECTATORS: Jordanelle State Park charges a  $5 entrance fee for spectators, which needs to be paid in cash to the driver when loading the shuttle. Please tell your spectators to be prepared to pay the entrance fee when hopping onto the bus.

IMPORTANT: As it was in previous years, there will NOT be a “drop-off” zone inside the park and athletes will need to ride their bike back to parking after the event.

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT:

When you ride your bike from Francis to the race venue, BE SURE ALL OF YOUR ITEMS ARE SECURE in a backpack. We've witnessed accidents of peoples gear falling off bikes, getting caught in spokes, etc.  Put it all in a gear back and you're set! Headlamps are extremely helpful as well if you are arriving at 5am.

SHUTTLES

BIKES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE SHUTTLES. This means all athletes will ride their bikes to and from the race venue (an easy downhill ~3.5 mile bike ride.) Consider this an opportunity to raise your heart rate before the swim, and a solid cool down after the race.

SPECTATORS ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO RIDE THEIR OWN BIKES TO THE VENUE. Simply Park your bikes behind the finish-line area in the "north pavilion" area.

Shuttles will be picking up spectators at Francis City Fairgrounds in Francis beginning at 6am and ending at 11:30pm.

Jordanelle State Park charges a  $5 entrance fee for spectators, which needs to be paid in cash to the driver when loading the shuttle. Please tell your spectators to be prepared to pay the entrance fee when hopping onto the bus.

Athlete park entrance fees are included in your registration.

TRANSITION AREA

The event is a single transition area for the swim/bike and bike/run. There is no bike drop on Friday.

HOW DO I GET MY BIKE BACK TO MY CAR AFTER THE RACE?

Because there is no shuttle service for bikes, athletes must ride their bikes back to parking at the fairgrounds.

ROCK CLIFF INFORMATION AND PARK GUIDELINES

Rock Cliff Nature Area is just that, nature. Everything from the wildlife to the boardwalks will remind you of why you love the outdoors.

Please remember to follow these few important guidelines:

DOGS

Do not bring your dogs or other pets. Animals are NOT allowed on the buses and are NOT allowed in the general Rock Cliff area, other than along the single paved road. Rock Cliff is a sensitive nature habitat, so please respect this mandate.  Sorry! We love our dogs too, but they can't be at this venue. Park Rules.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Litter could jeopardize the life of this and any other event. In addition to littering not being cool, USAT officials may give you a time penalty for littering on the race course.

Please dispose of all trash in proper receptacles. Please clean up any garbage/trash in your transition area and respect the Rock Cliff Nature Area.

All athletes are required to retrieve any gel packet or water bottle that is discarded during the bike. A USAT “abandoning of equipment” time penalty will result if littering is witnessed by a USAT official. Please also keep control of all gel packets on the bike and run.

THE SWIM

The expected water temp in June, is between 58-64 degrees.

Swimmers will begin with the time-trial format (5 at a time) and will head west in a rectangular, counter-clockwise manner, and will exit the water to the transition area. (1 loop for sprint distance, 2 loops for Intermediate(olympic) distance).

If you find yourself in need of support  while in the water, simply wave your hand/ arms or  swim to the nearest support team member. You may hold on to any support vessel without penalty as long as there is no forward movement.

SAVE YOUR FEET: We will have an optional shoe drop zone for folks who would prefer the run to the transition with shoes, flip-flops, etc.

THE BIKE

Sprint 14 Miles / Intermediate (olympic) 24.5 Miles.

Sprint Bike Course

Exit north out of Rock Cliff and travel along State Route 32 for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Lower River Road- south of Francis (at the bottom of the large hill) until you reach the stop sign at the end of Lower River Road (where it intersects with State Route 35). Turn left (south), climb the short hill, and return to Rock Cliff by staying on the same road (Hwy 32/35) the entire return trip. Note that the road travels through the town of Francis, with a fun downhill section south of town (40+ MPH is possible, but please stay under control during descent). There are no significant hills to climb however, the first half of the bike course is a false flat. This means that you will be climbing an approximate 1-2% grade initially, with the same 1-2% downhill on the return. All major intersections along the course will be manned by law enforcement to give cyclists the right-of-way. However, always use caution and follow the direction of the police and volunteers

Olympic Bike Course - 25 miles NEW (2nd year)

Exit north out of Rock Cliff and travel along State Route 32 for approximately 3 miles. Turn right onto Lower River Road- south of Francis (at the bottom of the large hill) until you reach the stop sign at the end of Lower River Road (where it intersects with State Route 35). Pass the Sprint Turnaround, and Turn right onto Bench Creek Road, where you will find a fun little climb, and a buffalo farm on your left. Turn Around at mile 12.5 and head.  When you exit Bench Creek Road and turn left, do not turn back onto Lower River Road, but instead climb the short hill and return to Rock Cliff via the same route as the Sprint course. This course is a false flat. This means that you will be climbing an approximate 1-2% grade initially, with the same 1-2% downhill on the return. All major intersections along the course will be manned by law enforcement to give cyclists the right-of-way. However, always use caution and follow the direction of the PD.

CAUTION: Sprint athletes, when hitting your turnaround, keep it tight and keep it right. Please be sure to merge with Olympic cyclists coming from beyond your turnaround. Olympic athletes, please use caution when approaching the Sprint turnaround. Don’t assume they see you flying toward them. Be safe and have each others back.

NOTE: Please have at least 2 bottles of water on your bike before heading out.

RUN COURSE

The Jordanelle run course this year is different than in years past. Both the sprint (5k) and intermediate (5 miles) distances are out and back, with a small detour through the nature park and passing the finish-line, due to some damage on the original course from flooding. We actually like this course better as you can really fly on your way back to the finish.

Both distances combines flat paved roads with a hilly single track trail that take you around the Jordanelle nature preserve.

Aid stations are at every mile-1.5 miles. Each aid station will have water, electrolyte replacement, high fives and music. Bring it on!
