An aquathlon (also called "Aquathon") is a two-stage continuous race including swimming followed by running. The official ITU Aquathlon world championship distances include a continuous 2.5km run, 1km swim and 2.5km swim. During the winter months, when the water temperature drops, aquathlon races are usually held however as a 1km swim followed by a 5km run, with varying race distances having occurred throughout the event's history.

The sport of Aquathlon began in the early 20th century in the form of ocean lifeguard competitions. Today, Aquathlons are organized throughout the year, including the Aquathlon World Championships held by the International Triathlon Union (ITU) annually. In 2018, The multi-sport Aquathlon World championships will be held in Fyn, Denmark between 6th-14th July.

Aquathlon events a great way for experienced triathletes to mix up their programmes and maintain enthusiasm and fitness levels, and also to provide a route for novice athletes to enter the world of multisport events.
