    Bear Lake Half Course Info:

    Swim Course: 1.2 miles

Bear Lake is only a few feet low, however it is a relatively shallow lake for a couple hundred yards into the lake at the South end.  From the beach the water may be over 100 yards away from the parking lot (and true sand beach) and the water may continue to be shallow for another 100-200 yards into the lake. Swimmers may stand up in the water to rest and will not be disqualified, BUT there may be hazards on the bottom of the lake.  The swim will start on the shore and be a running start into the water.  The swim will be in a counter clockwise direction. All buoys will be on the left shoulder. All Swimmers will do one lap.  HALF athletes will swim to the farthest buoys and turn to the left and head around the two farthest buoys on their left.

If you need a rest, while in the water, waive your arms or simply swim to the nearest kayak. You can hold on to this without penalty.

If you need to cut your swim short for any reason, let a kayaker or lifeguard know this and they will bring you in to shore. Please turn in your timing chip to race staff at that point.  Again, if you are struggling or need to rest, you may actually be able to stand up during many sections of the swim close to shore.

Follow the marked path to transition!  There are hazards on the beach like small stumps if you decide to run off of the marked course.  We DO NOT want you to suffer injury, and you will also be disqualified if you run off through any unmarked beach section.

    Bike Course: 56 miles

You will be making an entire loop around Bear Lake clockwise.  Once you are on the upper Northeast section of the Lake you make a small loop to gain approximately 3-4 extra miles to make the course a true HALF distance course.  There are several State Park restrooms along the course.  They are labeled on the Course Map.

Bike Course Detail:  Exit at the West end of transition, ride out of the State Park staying to the RIGHT on the FAR FEFT LANE of the paved roads.  Exit onto the main road, highway 30, making a RIGHT hand turn on the main road (Hwy 30).  You will have accelerated quite a bit at this point, so please be safe making this tight turn.  You will make an entire loop around BEAR LAKE.  This will also enable you to ride on the inside without crossing major roads and heavy additional traffic for the remainder of the course.  You will continue on this main road which will turn into hwy 89 (N Bear Lake Blvd) for the next 12 miles where you will cross the Idaho State line.

At about Mile 21, you will take a RIGHT hand turn onto Turnpike Rd continuing to circle around the lake.  At about Mile 23, Turnpike Rd turns into N Beach Rd.  Just before Mile 28 you will turn RIGHT onto E Shore Rd.

Once on E Shore Rd, you will travel South until you reach a turn around.  Please SLOW DOWN to make this 180 degree turn.  You will turn around and head North back up to the North end on paved section of E Shore Rd where you will turn 180 degrees once again.  You will not be turning around in bike traffic at this turn around, but we still ask you to be careful at each turn around.  These turn around points enable the Bike Course to be a TRUE 56 Mile HALF, so enjoy!

On this section of road will find pot holes for a few miles.  Please stay alert.  You will also cycle over several cattle guard crossings in the road.  DO NOT take these at an angle, unless you like factures bones and tacos for bike rims!  Please use caution while crossing these.  This is one of the most scenic country rides in the West, but please keep in mind that a large section of the course is in the country.

Eventually you will merge with shorter distances riders doing an out and back on this section of the course and the road will change names once again to N Cisco Rd.  After Mile 53, the road will turn LEFT and change to Main St.  After Mile 54, you will turn back onto hwy 30.  This is a sharp RIGHT turn into traffic, so SLOW DOWN!  There may be runners on this section about 1 Mile down hwy 30 the course so pay attention!  At about Mile 56, you will turn RIGHT back into the Rendezvous Beach area of the Bear Lake State Park.  Please slow down and pay attention to runners and directions.  You will enter the transition the way you exited on your bike.

Aid Stations and Restrooms:  There will be Aid Stations along the bike portion of the HALF.  These Stations will provide bottled water and HEED (HAMMER) sports drink in bike bottles.  There are five restrooms along the course (four Bear Lake State Park restrooms and one portable); the Aid Stations will be located within 100 yards of these facilities for the convenience and safety of the riders as well as the volunteers manning the Aid Stations.  The restrooms and Aid Stations for the HALF are marked on the HALF map in Red and Green on the course maps.  You may need to zoom in to view specific portions of the course as the markers may appear to overlap each other while viewing the entire course.

NOTE: You cannot ride your bike through the transition area.

Bike course is NOT closed to traffic except at turnaround points.

Please obey the Course officials at intersections and turnarounds.

Cyclists are personally responsible for the proper working condition of their bike. Bike helmets ARE required! No helmet, No racing. No exceptions! USAT officials will be present at this race, DO NOT ride 2-3 people deep on this course! Future races depend on your cooperation. Thank you for respecting it. It is the athletes responsibility to know and follow USA Triathlon rules. For complete rules visit usatriathlon.org. Absolutely no drafting another bike or any other vehicle is allowed. This is an individual endurance event. A space of at least 2-bike lengths must be left between competitors.

    1. ANSI-approved hard shell helmets are required. No helmet, no race, period.
    2. No individual support allowed.
    3. Each participant must be individually responsible for repair and maintenance of his or her own bike during the cycling portion of the triathlon.
    4. Cyclists are responsible for obeying all traffic laws and for any infractions.
    5. Two water bottles on your bike are recommended.

    Run Course: 13.1 miles

The run begins at the East side of transition (opposite from the large parking lot).  You WILL NOT follow the Sprint OR Olympic run Courses!

When you exit transition turn left and run along transition with transition on your left.  Once you pass transition you will turn to your left and pass the Park Entrance Fee Booth on your left.  Stay to the LEFT!  Other lesser athletes (Sprint/Olympic) may be exiting the park in their vehicles by this time.  Once you reach the entrance of the Park, you will cross Hwy 30 and turn RIGHT running against traffic.  Law Enforcement should stop traffic for you, but make sure everyone sees you and traffic stops.  Just before 1 12 miles into the run you will turn left onto a dirt road (N Meadowville Rd).  You will follow this road for almost 7 miles; however this road winds around quite a bit.  Just past mile 3 12 into the run, you will need to remember to stay to the left, so that you do not accidently wind up on Cooks Rd.  Please review Map!

Between miles 3 34 and 6 34 you will run along a long straight section of Meadowville Rd.  At about mile 6 34, you will turn LEFT onto N Round Valley Dr.   This road will take you into Laketown.  Just before mile 10 of the run, this road will change to Center St.  Run through Main St to 200 East.  At 200 East, turn LEFT.  Follow this road to Hwy 30.  Once you reach Hwy 30, turn LEFT.  Follow this road back to Bear Lake State Park.  Stay to the left of traffic until you reach the State Park.  Law Enforcement will help you cross traffic to reenter the Park.

When you reach the Park Entrance Booth turn RIGHT, and run to the first right hand turn.  Turn LEFT onto this RV Camping area.  As the road comes close to the trees next to the beach, you will see the transition area to your left.  Turn LEFT.  When you reach transition, run to the right on transition and come out at the main, large parking lot.  Sprint to the FINISH!

Aid Stations and Restrooms:  There will be water, HEED replenishment drink, and HAMMER Gel at several Aid Stations located approximately every 1.5 miles. In addition to the State Park restroom immediately to your left as you come out of the Transition Area, there will also be one restroom midway through the run course.  Please view course map for details.

Please be sure to let the timing officials remove your timing chip at the finish of your race.

    Bear Lake Olympic Course Info:

    Swim Course: 1.5k

Olympic athletes will swim to the middle set buoys and turn to the left and head around the two buoys on their left then swim back to the beach.

If you need a rest, while in the water, waive your arms or simply swim to the nearest kayak. You can hold on to this without penalty.

If you need to cut your swim short for any reason, let the kayaker know this and they will bring you in to shore. Please turn in your timing chip to race staff at that point.  Again, if you are struggling or need to rest, you may actually be able to stand up during many sections of the swim.

    Bike Course: 40k

Exit at the West end of transition. Ride out of the State Park staying to the right on all paved paths.  Exit onto the main road, highway 30, making a LEFT hand turn. ALWAYS BIKE WITH TRAFFIC to the right of traffic.  (You will have accelerated quite a bit at this point, so please be safe making this tight turn.) About 2 Miles into the ride, you will make a LEFT turn onto Main St in Laketown, UT.  This is a sharp turn, so stay alert!  You will travel almost directly north for about one mile at which time the road will make a sharp RIGHT turn and the road will change to N Cisco Rd.  This will gradually wind around the south and East side of the lake with gradual rolling hills.

At about 12.42 miles into the ride, you will have your own turn around chute in the middle of the road to keep you separated from the long course cyclists. (You cannot miss it).  You will then return using the same roads.  When you arrive at the State Park entrance, stay to the right, just left of the runners marked path.   Enter the transition slowly on the West side and get ready for your run!
