The exciting 5150 Triathlon Series (pronounced Fifty-One Fifty) was launched by World Endurance Sports Group (also known as the WTC or World Triathlon Corporation) in 2010 to fill the void for a global standard distance triathlon series in a non-drafting format. The event offers the opportunity for mass participation in a manageable race distance.
The series takes the format of the standard or international distance triathlon which was put together by the fusion of three free standing Olympic events into one triathlon. (1500m open water swim, 40km cycling time trial and 10km road run). This happened back in 1989. Since 2000 this racing distance has been taken into the Olympics, with the alteration that the cycling leg became draft legal.
The new 5150 global triathlon series is based on the same principles, ethos and philosophy of the World Endurance Sports Groups legendary Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events.
The name 5150 is based on a simple add up sum: 1.5km swim + 40km cycle + 10km run = 51.50km.
