Description:

2013 Bone Island Triathlon:

  • When the first Spanish explorers came to Key West there were bones everywhere, littering the beaches and rocky shores; bones resulting from century-old wars between the native Calusa & Carib Indians.
  • Thus, the explorers named this place Cayo Hueso; Isle of Bones; Bone Island. The name was apt for the people who followed: settlers who lived by causing shipwrecks and then racing out to the reef to claim their spoils.
  • Bahamians who came to these shores in search of who-knows-what and stayed to become part of a remote island city; gritty, gutsy survivors from around the Caribbean and some who made their way south and west from the peninsula of Florida & beyond.
  • Scavengers, gamblers & military men forced to forge a tough new breed on an unfriendly landscape.
  • From this sparse beginning comes the background for one of the toughest 2013 iron distance races that will be the only to occur in North America in January: The Bone Island 140.6 & 70.3!

Inaugural race had a lot of challenges, but overall was a nice venue. Swam in the Atlantic which was rough with large swells. Would be outstanding to be able to swim on the gulf side of the island. Rough bike course in many areas. Bike course was not exceptionally well marked, possible to ride by and have to double back to do the second "short loop" on the full tri course. The last five miles of the run course was not good. It consisted of Zig-zaging across streets and running on sidewalks with pedestrians. Very confusing after a long day of physical activity. Must fix the run course by eliminating the run past the finish prior to completing the last few miles. Should extend the bike to eliminate the second loop (or all if possible). Overall, a good city and venue. With a few fixes to the course, this could be a great race!
