2011 Elephant Man Triathlon:

  • Elephant Man Olympic Triathlon is an intermediate distance tri, and the Inaugural Elephant Man Long Course are perhaps the longest and most challenging courses in the state.
  • The courses are scenic and one of the only times Elephant Butte Dam is open to the public.

    • Course Information:


    Swim:
  • The swim is a loop in Elephant Butte Lake (water temperature averages 74F; wet suits will be allowed if water temperature is 78F or below).

    Bike:
  • The bike course will be a hilly and challenging, but beautiful ride that travels north through the city of Elephant Butte and along the perimeter of the lake before a climb up and out to the other side of I-25.
  • For the Long Course you will turn at Hwy 52 and head up into the historic Cuchillo area of Sierra County.
  • West of Cuchillo you hit the turn around and it is a speedy return to the transition area.

    Run:
  • The final leg is a run that provides a unique opportunity to cross Elephant Butte Dam.
  • On the other side of the dam you will hit the mile 3 turnaround for the Olympic race.
  • Long Course athletes will continue on to the historic Dam Site /Winding trails area.
  • Initial and final portions of the out and back run will be along graded trail just steps from the beach and campsites.
  • There will be lots of opportunities for friends and family to cheer you on!

  • Elephant Butte State Park is home to New Mexico's largest lake and centrally located along I-25.
  • 150 miles south of Albuquerque.
  • 150 miles north of El Paso.
