Run the Hermit Pass Marathon (or Half Hermit or Lucky Hermit 13K for that matter) and make running history! This is now the 3rd marathon to top out over 13,000ft. in Colorado. If you've done Leadville and Pikes Peak, here's another run with the same challenge. Only maybe more challenging...
The Hermit Pass Marathon starts at 7,877' on the floor of the lush Wet Mountain Valley at A Painted View Ranch outside Westcliffe, CO and ascends west to the crest of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the top of Hermit Pass at 13,000'. No pavement! Gravel county roads and 4WD Forest Service roads only. 5,123' elevation gain through pine forests and past lakes and streams in the San Isabel National Forest, by permission of a special use permit from the USFS. Outstanding views of 13-14,000' peaks. The Half Hermit shares much of the same beautiful route with a turnaround at about 10,350'.
The Lucky Hermit 13 K starts on the Valley floor at A Painted View Ranch and then makes a loop from Hermit Road to Ute Mesa Trail, to Pines Road, to Kettle Lane and back to Hermit Road and a Painte View Ranch. The route gains about 1000' then gradually descends back. There are gradual rolling hills and great views of the Wet Mountain Valley and Wet Mountains. All on gravel/dirt county roads.
T-shirt, finisher medal, good food and drink, great mountain setting, and wonderful people add to this event. Stay the weekend in the Westcliffe -there's 780 sq. miles of WOW!
