The 8th annual Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon was dedicated to the memory of Illinois State Trooper Rodney Miller who lost his life in the line of duty, honoring his passion for triathlon, youth athletics and people. The RTM Lakeside Tri has become an annual event in support of the Rodney T. Miller Foundation, supporting youth athletics in the Central Illinois area. Funds raised by the triathlon have been awarded to youth programs and schools to provide equipment and up-grade fields and facilities, and have provided life-saving swimming skills to an entire JH school whose student body was 95% non-swimming. We appreciate the support of triathletes and sponsors in this worthwhile endeavor.

Course Information:

Intermediate Course: the opening swim is a wave-start .75 mile open water swim in Lake Decatur. Water temperature is typically in the low- to mid-70's for the race, posted daily on the website during race week. Swim start is in the water, approximately waist-deep, exit between two boat docks with volunteers on hand to assist water exit. The swim is a U-shaped point-to-point well defined by buoys and anchored boats. The bike ride begins at the mount line to the left of the TA exit and is a 19-mile out-and-back on closed roads through rolling hills in town and out to the turn-around on Il State Highway 105. Safety and support are very evident with police and volunteers along the entire course, first aid and water stations are scattered along the way. The bike dismount is on a long downhill with volunteers stationed to alert riders of the dismount line. The run for the Intermediate Course leaves the TA running to the athlete's right and following the lake to a turn around, then back on the lake front passing the TA and along the lake front, leaving the park running under US 36 and along Lake Shore Drive to the turn-around. Then back to the finish line in Nelson Park. Safety support and water stations are located just outside the TA, at the first turn, just beyond the US 36 underpass and at the final turn-around.

Short Course: the opening swim starts in waist-deep water and follows a rope (to the swimmer's right) along the ends of the boat docks in the Nelson Park Marina, exiting the lake at the boat launch slips with volunteers on hand to assist the exit. The bike is a 19-mile out-and-back using the same course as the Intermediate Course. Turn left at the TA exit to the mount line and you're on your way! The 3.1 mile run turns to the athlete's left when leaving the TA, and then follows the lake shoreline to the east and north under US 36 and on to the turn-around. Water is available at the TA exit, just beyond the US 36 underpass and at the turn-around.
