The RTM Kids Triathlon (ages 10-14) is a 250 yard lake swim/wave start, followed by a 3.3 mile bike totally contained within Nelson park closed to traffic. The run is also within Nelson Park, along Lake Decatur. Both the ride and the run are an out-and-back course layout.
The RTM Kids Duathlon (ages 9-14) begins with a 1 mile run along Lake Decatur out-and-back, a 3.3 mile bike, followed by the closing run of 1 mile using the same run course.
The Kids Duathlon (ages 9-14) starts at 7:30, followed (at 3-minute intervals) by the Kids Triathlon (two waves divided by age).
The RTM Kids Duathlon (ages 5-8) follows the completion of the Kids Tri and the Kids Du (ages 9-14) for the safety of the younger kids.
Awards follow the completion of the races.
Our Nelson Park Course is totally contained with Nelson Park for the kids' safety. The older kids triathlon and duathlon have two hills to negotiate on the bike, runs are on a flat course, both courses out-and-back with lots of volunteers and police officers on the course to ensure safety and guide the young athletes. Water and safety stations are interspersed along the course.
Coming to Decatur on I-72: take the US 51 South exit and continue through downtown Decatur on US 51 South. Heading south on US 51, take the Lake Shore Drive exit on the right just before crossing Lake Decatur. On Lake Shore Drive, proceed east to Lost Bridge Road (third traffic signal), turn right and then take the first left into Nelson Park, about 400 yards. Packet pick up and parking will be on your left.
Coming to Decatur from the south on US 51: take the Lake Shore Drive exit just after crossing Lake Decatur, also a right-hand exit. Proceed east to Lost Bridge Road (third traffic signal), turn right and then take the first left into Nelson Park, about 400 yards. Packet pick up and parking will be on your left.
Coming to Decatur from the east on US 36: cross Lake Decatur and turn left onto E. Wood Street. Follow E. Wood to 22nd Street and turn left. At the stop sign, 22nd Street becomes Lake Shore Drive, proceed on Lake Shore Drive to Lost Bridge Road (second traffic signal) and turn left onto Lost Bridge, then take the first left into Nelson Park (about 400 yards). Packet pickup and parking will be on your left.
