Recognized by NW triathletes as the must do event to open the triathlon season, the Blue Lake Triathlon encompasses two full days of racing (Sprint and novice races on Saturday & Olympic races on Sunday). This two-day, fun filled weekend also includes the Sports & Fitness Expo, while the Olympic distance event serves as the TRI NorthWest Club/Team Championship. Triathlon Clubs from across the NW gather at Blue Lake Park to compete for boasting rights as the top club of multisport athletes in the region. All efforts will be made to announce the Club/Team winner on race day.
Swim: Triangular lake swim (water temperature in the mid to upper 60's).
Bike: Semi-closed course (local traffic only) on an out-and-back, westbound on Marine Drive, on a newly paved road. The Olympic distance races will also have a 7+ mile out-and-back to the east of Blue Lake Park on Marine Drive, Sundial and Graham Roads. This section of the course is open to traffic, but lightly traveled.
The bike portion of the event is flat and fast with the majority of it on a section of Marine Dr that is closed to all but local traffic. This makes this course one of the safest and fastest in the region. The Sprint course falls entirely on this portion of Marine Dr and participants rarely encounter a vehicle. The Olympic course has a 7-mile section that goes south towards I-84 to the Troutdale Airport and back on quiet, lightly traveled county roads.
Run: Flat and fast within Blue Lake Park, with an out and back section on the Marine Drive bike path. Aid stations with water & electrolyte: two stops on the Sprint course and four on the Olympic course. All miles are marked.
Blue Lake Park is located 15 miles east of downtown Portland, OR. Take I-84 east to the Fairview Exit (exit #14). Follow the signs to Blue Lake Park.
