The race will start at the river put in at the bottom of the outflow of the Comemaugh Dam. The boat segment will be a timed start with individual teams going off with a minimum of 30 seconds between racers. Race order will be determined by availability of racers at the starting line beginning at 9 AM and concluding before 10 AM. Racers will be timed electronically and team members will be required to transfer the timing chips in designated transition areas ONLY. The river leg is approximately 7 miles long and will involve some minor river currents and approximately 3,000 cfs. If you are uncertain of your ability in moving water, (DO NOT SIGN UP). Life jackets will be required to be on each boater the entire duration of this leg. Racers not wearing life jackets will be disqualified with no refund. Anticipated leg times of 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
TRANSITION ONE:
Racers will exit the water at the Saltsburg Boat Launch. Racers will be required carry their boats and ALL GEAR to their designated spot in the transition area. there will be one way in and one way out of the transition area. Assistance may be available to HELP carry smaller SOLO participants with boats get to the transition area. The best transition locations (shortest carry) will be based on registration order. The earliest registrants get the best spots. So register early. Aid station will be available.
SECOND LEG:
The bike portion will be and out and back loop primarily using the rail trail along the Comemaugh River and be approximately 14 miles in length. Not only is it beautiful and include riding through a cool tunnel, but barring several guarded road crossings and a spin through the park, most of the race will be devoid of cars! The surface will be mostly crushed limestone, with short sections of dirt road and a tiny bit of asphalt. While mostly flat there will be 4 areas with modest elevation gains. Two on the way out and two on the way back. While not difficult, these areas will marked and may present some challenges for riders on the downhill side as well as a chance to "open" the legs on the minor climbs. It is strongly encouraged to preride the course. Mountain bikes, trail bikes, cyclocross bikes and even road bikes with 27 MM tires or wider are good choices. Your bike may get dirty and or gritty.
TRANSITION TWO:
Once again the bike to run transition will use the same transition area. One way in and one way out again. Team mates can ONLY swap their timing chips INSIDE the transition area. your bike will need to be returned to the same designated location before runners are allowed on the course.
THIRD LEG:
The run portion of the race will head towards Avonmore using the rail trail (EASY ON THE KNEES) and offer spectacular views of the Comemaugh river and ultimately over top of the Black Legs Creek. The turnaround will occur shortly after the bridge. The run portion will be a true 5K (3.2 miles) It will be fast and relatively flat.
FINISH:
The finish line will occur near the transition area in downtown Saltsburg. Plenty of places for friends, family and team mates to cheer you into the finish.
AWARD CEREMONY:
Will occur on the Canal Path post race. Time based on Director's Discretion.
