I can't really rate the competition at the Eugene triathlon, because I cancelled.
Unfortunately, the event organizers had to cancel the swim, due to an algae bloom in Fern Ridge Reservoir; an unfortunate, but necessary call. No gripes there. The organizers then added a one mile run in its stead. The same thing had happened several weeks earlier at the Blue Lake Tri, and I -- to my later regret -- gave it a try. If you are not a runner in the first place, that extra mile can be a real killer. It took my ol' joints several weeks to recover. Thus my reluctant decision to cancel in Eugene.
No my complaint . . . while I would have appreciated a return of my $125 registration fee, I can understand it not being returned, and so asked only that it be rolled over to next year. All I got from the organizers was a brief, "sorry for the inconvenience, our system isn't set up to be able to do that."
So, if you do register for next years Eugene triathlon, be aware that #1 Fern Ridge Reservoir has been closed for swimming at one time or another for the last two years, and #2, that if you have to cancel, you can kiss your registration fee goodby, because Eugene Triathlon "isn't setup to roll it over to the next year."
