King Of The Smokies Triathlon Sprint & International Distances is one awesome triathlon in Western North Carolina!! 

     Lake Junaluska is a High Country mountain lake nestled in the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center, in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. Centrally located to all types of natural wilderness, waterfalls,Blue Ridge Parkway, Max Patch, Cold Mountain, Great Smoky Mountain National Park. 
     Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center is a wholesome private community with many lodges, hotels, apartments, cabins, campground and homes for rent while your here for the triathlon. You can walk down small quite streets to the T-1 Area the morning of the triathlon!! Peaceful Restaurants, Cafe's, and all types of recreational amenities are here. We have many "NEW" Divisions this year!  Para-Triathlete, Wounded Warrior, Challenged Athlete, All Women Relay Team, All Men Relay Team, COED Team.

Course Information:

Sprint Distance Triathlon:

Swim:  1/2 Mile Open Water, Course is a "Straight out & back" Round 2 buoys at the Halfway point and swim directly back to the T-1 Area. A manned Life Guard Station is at the half way point for Emergency Assistance, kayakers and other boaters are stationed along the course for mutual assistance. Wet suit use will be determined the week of the triathlon.

Bike:    The Bike Course is a fairly easy "Out & Back" of 17.3 Miles with few turns. Not a technical Bike Course but will be fast.

Run:  The Run is 3.77 Miles around the lake on a paved Green Way and a limited distance of road way that is secured for this triathlon inside the resort. Water Aid Stations are posted every Mile and many Volunteers are along to route to direct and assist if needed. You will be directed in to the Finish Line area down a custom chute and across the finish line. There you will be given fresh ice cold bottled water, your Finishers "Woodallion", and we will assist removing your ankle timing chip. A "Recovery Food" table, designed specifically for triathletes, is available right as you finish.

* T-1 Area for Sprint and International Distance Triathletes are separate; you must
   Register first and begin your race number before entering the T-1 area to rack your
   bike. We are encouraging you to register the night before and receive your race
   number and body marking and rack your bike in T-1. T-1 and T-2 are Secured Areas 
* Our Awards are locally handcrafted pottery vases with our logo and event on them.
* All USAT Rules and Regulations will be enforced. USAT Officials will be present.


International Distance Triathlon:

Swim:  The International Distance Triathlon is .99 of a Mile. The Course is a "Triangular" shape swimming in a counter clockwise direction. Marker buoys are at every hundred yard; and larger turn buoys at two points. A Life Guard Station is positioned at the Halfway Point for Emergency Assistance only. Triathletes may stop and rest at the Life Guard Station temporarily.  Kayakers and other boaters are stationed throughout the course for assistance.
Bike:  The Bike Course is 25.76 Miles. This is a challenging course with climbs and fast straight ways. A "Bottle Exchange" is at the Halfway Point with a "Port-A-Potty" station. The course is well marked with our traditional "Blue Bear" marking your mileage and advance directional arrows showing you which direction you need to turn ahead. Many Volunteers are assisting along this course. EMS Response Units will be present and portions of this course will be secured. Escort is provide for lead cyclists and rear cyclists. An Official "SWAG" vehicle will roam the bike course assisting cyclists with minor repairs. If a mechanical break down occurs you will be returned to T-2, given an adjusted time for the bike and may continue on and finish the triathlon.
NOTE: You must be able to make minor repairs to your bike yourself.
Run: The Run is 7.37 Miles. This will be twice around the lake for International Distance triathletes. This is on a paved Green Way with a small portion on a secured road within the resort. Water Aid Stations are posted every mile and many Volunteers are positioned to assist and direct triathletes. You will be guided into a custom chute towards the Finish line by Volunteers. 

Directions:

From The East:
I-40 West to Exit 27, onto US 19/23. Travel 3-4 miles take Exit 103 to Lake Junaluska, approx. 1 mile turn right onto Lake Shore Drive. Bethea Visitors Center is one your left. Parking attendants will guide you to closest available parking. 

From The West: 
I-40 East to Exit 27, onto US 19/23. Travel 3-4 miles, take Exit 103 to Lake Junaluska, approx. 1 mile, turn right onto Lake Shore Drive. Bethea Visitors Center is on your left. Parking attendants will guide you to the closest available parking.

From The South: Atlanta:
I-85 North to I-985 North, take 365 North to 441 North into North Carolina. NC 441 will merge into US 74, which turns into 23/74 North to Lake Junaluska. Take Exit 102-B to Maggie Valley/Lake Junaluska. Go approx. 2 miles to "T" intersection at Red light turn right onto US-19. Travel just a few hundred yards and turn left onto Lake shore Drive. Bethea Visitors Center will be on your left. Parking attendants will guide you to the closest available parking.

Note: All over night guess's should register at the Bethea Visitors Center.
