2012 marks the 23rd Annual Full Vineman Triathlon, making it the oldest independant full distance triathlon held in the continental United States. The experience which Vineman athletes have will be unmatched, as they swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles through beautiful Sonoma County's wine country. For 2012 we will limit the field to 1100 participants.

In 1990 the Vineman was designed to be the peoples full distance event with an emphasis on making the average athletes experience of completing the classic distance the most enjoyable and personalized as possible. While the sport of triathlon has changed drastically over the past decade and a half, the soul of the Vineman remains the same.

Whether you are an athlete hoping to complete your first full distance race, youve been closed out of other full distance events, or you just want to be part of a great full distance triathlon, the Vineman is for you. With beautiful wine country scenery, typically cool mornings and warm days, and a relatively small field of athletes that doesnt make you feel like part of a cattle call, youll find the Vineman to be an athlete friendly race. For 22 years the Vineman has been a favorite of many athletes because of the individual attention they receive at the event. Whatever your reason or motivation for competing, the Full Vineman and its friendly staff of more than 800 volunteers look forward to making your experience a great one.

The Vineman course is a tour of Sonoma County vineyards & wineries, which passes through five distinct regions. The swim takes place at Johnsons Beach in the Russian River, one of the most rustic swim venues youll see in the sport. The bike course is a mix of terrain, and travels through the Russian River, Dry Creek, Alexander Valley, and Chalk Hill grape growing regions. With slightly less than 4000 feet of climbing for the entire bike course athletes find the course to be challenging but not overwhelming. The three loop, out-and-back, run course takes the athletes from the finish area through the back roads of Sonoma County. This will allow athletes to see their fellow competitors, family, and friends more often and keep everyone closer to home.

If you want to complete a full distance triathlon in an established and well respected event, here is your chance to do so with a relatively small field. In 2011 there were 1000 entrants.

Course Information:

Swim Course Details:

The Full Vineman swim is staged at Johnsons Beach in Guerneville, California. The swim takes place in the Russian River. Water temperatures are typically between 72 and 76 degrees. If this is the case on race morning wetsuits will be allowed as this falls within USA Triathlon guidelines. (Please go to http://www.usatriathlon.org/ for the rules regarding wetsuits.)

The swim course is a double out and back course which starts in front of the dam at Johnsons Beach and proceeds upstream to the turn around point where the swimmers will then return to the start point for the second out & back. Swimmers will keep the swim buoys on their left for the entire swim. A neutral area, which is marked with buoys, where there are no swimmers, will separate the swimmers on the outbound and return legs of the swim. The swim course, which averages between 4 and 7 feet in depth, will be monitored by lifeguards in kayaks.

Between the Russian River being dammed in a number of locations near Guerneville and the fact that it almost never rains in Sonoma County between June 1st and October 15th, there is very little current in the river during this time period. Under typical conditions, a 25-minute mile swimmer should expect it to take about one minute longer to make it to the turn-around point (swimming against the stream) than it would to return back to the swim finish from the turn-around (swimming with the current.)

The dam at Johnsons Beach is a seasonal dam which is up only in the summer months. The dam is scheduled to be in place by mid June and will remain in the river until the end of September.

Oomph! Bike Course Details:

The 112 mile point-to-point Oomph! bike course for the Full Vineman passes through the heart of Sonoma Countys wine country. Shortly after beginning the ride beneath the redwoods in Guerneville, it is off through miles and miles of vineyards! Dozens of wineries and literally hundreds of vineyards line the Vineman bike course.

The bike begins at Johnsons Beach in Guerneville and finishes at Windsor High School (approximately 17 miles away from its starting point). Aid stations are located approximately every 13 miles and have bottled water, Gatorade G Series Pro 02 Perform, Clif Bars and bananas. NOTE: Gatorade G Series Pro 02 Perform contains an tailored to help replace the the fluids and electrolytes elite and endurance athletes lose during their longer, more intense workouts, with twice the sodium and higher levels of potassium and magnesium to support longer, more intense occasions.

The gently rolling hills are challenging, but not overwhelming. The roads are lightly traveled and will be marshaled by USA Triathlon officials. Cyclist will make two loops of the bike course. The bike course will remain open until 5:30 PM.

Air temperatures generally range from the low-to-mid 50s early in the morning to daytime highs between 80 and 95 degrees.

Chalk Hill, the largest hill on the course is approximately 385 feet above sea level at its crest. The bike course begins at approximately 50 feet above sea level and ends at approximately 100 feet above sea level.
