2020 Grizzly Triathlon: (Updated date Coming Soon)
The Grizzly Triathlon is a Triathlon race in Missoula, Montana consisting of a Super Sprint.
The Grizzly Triathlon was first run in 1987. Brian Fruit, the Grizzly Pool manager at the time, organized this event and it had 10 heats with 14 racers per heat (2 per lane for a total of 140 participants). The first heats had the fastest swimmers, and the later, warmer air-temperature (this is a triathlon in April in Montana after all!) heats featured the more casual racers of the day. Oh how times have changed! In 1999 Giles Thelen took over leadership of the race (Brian dropped the race after 1997 and there was no event in 1998) with the support of the local triathlon club, Team Stampede. Since then he has tweaked and modified the race with a few key points kept in mind:
Keep the race open and accessible to first time triathletes, while at the same time having it be a venue for spirited competition. We have had at least 30% of our racers every year use this as their first multisport event ever!
Keep the course safe, fun and challenging.
Bike course will be out and back along HWY 10 toward Bonner. Turn around is just past the Milltown Garage. Bike course is mostly flat with a short hill. Use EXTREME caution at the Eastgate Shopping Center.
Run course will go out west from the pool, head north on Campus drive, around the grounds and labor shop and head east on the Kim Williams Trail. ~1.5 km into the race the course will head onto a single track trail known as The asmokejumpersa trail. It will head up for ~.3km, then come down at the first junction. Runners will re-join The Kim Williams trail, head east for a few tenths of a km, then return to campus on the main trail, diverting south at the Mount Sentinel cut-off, heading through the aMa Parking lot and finishing near the Physical plant.
