In 2018, the Huntersville Sprint Triathlon took on an exciting new format as an OPEN WATER SWIM style race. The 400m or 200m open water pool swim options . No more waiting for hours in the cold to get into the pool. No more problems with “improper” seed times. All athletes will be in the pool within 25-minutes of the start gun. There is an additional 25yd warm up pool for those who wish to warm up prior to their wave start!
The 50 meter competition pool is very spectator friendly and will be used in a unique fashion in that we will have athletes start in groups of 10 athletes as they head for the first turn buoy. Yes, we will have turn buoys instead of lane lines for this event as it is the first “pool open water race” in North Carolina! This location comes with a great bike and run courses as well! The bike course is a mix of rolling hills and flat sections and is a “big ring” course throughout. The run course follows Verhoeff Dr with a spectacular downhill finish.
This event is an open water style pool swim. Participants will choose between a 200 yd SHORT COURSE option or a 400 yd LONG COURSE option during registration. Athletes will go off in waves of 10, with all athletes being in the water within 25 minutes of the start. There will be no lane lines; a turn buoy will indicate when you turn. The bike and run course and distances are the same for both swim distance options. Swim caps are not provided for pool swim events. If you would like to wear a swim cap, then be sure to bring your own.
The 20K bike course for the Huntersville Sprint Triathlon is a one-loop design. The course is best described as moderately hilly. The roads are mostly two-lane and will be open to vehicular traffic, but should be relatively light on race morning. The western half of this course will be familiar to participants who race in the Tri Latta Triathlon.
The 5K run course is comprised of an out and back on roads.
