On Sunday, September 14th, the Friends of Fort Knox are sponsoring their first Double Hill Duathlon, 3-mile run and 16-mile bike race.

The race will begin at 9 AM, Sunday morning, with both of the race legs starting at the base of the Penobscot Narrows Observatory.

The race is being organized by Friends of Fort Knox Board member A.J. Greif, of Bar Harbor, who is an avid runner and cyclist. - -

Course Information:

FRIENDS OF FORT KNOX PRESENTS: DOUBLE HILL DUATHLON

Both legs start at the base of the observatory.

The bike leg climbs Fort Knox Hill from the Prospect side before finishing in front of the fort. - -

Directions:

From Belfast:

Proceed north on US Rte 1, through Searsport and Stockton Springs, immediately before crossing the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, take a left onto Rte. 174.

Fort Knox will be approximately 1/4 mile up on your right. - - From Bar Harbor:

Once over the bridge take a right onto Rte. 174.

Fort Knox will be approximately 1/4 mile up on your right. - - From Bangor:

On Rte. 1A South....follow Rte 1A South through the towns of Hampden, Winterport, Frankfort and Prospect.

In Prospect Center, take a left onto Rte. 174.

Follow Rte 174 approximately 4 miles.

Fort Knox will be on your left. - - On Rte 15 South....

follow Rte 15 South through the city of Brewer and the towns of Orrington and Bucksport.

In Bucksport, take a right onto US Rte.1 South and proceed over the Penobscot Narrows bridge.

Immediately upon exiting the bridge take a right onto Rte. 174.

Fort Knox will be approximately 1/4 mile up on your right. - -

Registration for this fundraising race is $25 for and individual and $35 for team entrants.

Prizes will be awarded for all age groups and male/female and coed team winners.

Participants may register on-site Sunday, September 14, starting at 8 AM or may print and mail in an application in advance from the Friends web site at fortknox.maineguide.com.

Applications may also be obtained by telephoning the Friends of Fort Knox at 469-6553 or stopping by the gift shop at the Fort. - -

Proceeds from the event will support the Friends of Fort Knox Century and a Half masonry repair project.

The project is focused on repairing vast sections of the Fort where masonry deterioration may pose a public safety and structural integrity threat. - -

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.
