The SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon is the flagship event of the SavageMan Triathlon Festival and it has already established legendary status after just it's inaugural year and sell-out status in all subsequent years. There are many aspects that make this race a truly unique and special event:
  • The spectacular race venue and extraordinarily challenging course leave no doubters to the claim of "World's Most Savage and Most Beautiful Triathlon".
  • The Westernport Wall and the Westernport Wall Block Party is an experience unique to triathlon with a 31% grade lined with screaming, cowbell-ringing crazed spectators.
  • The crossing of the Eastern Continental Divide at Big Savage Mountain, a 7.1 mile, 1950' elevation gain ascent with multiple, extended stretches approaching 20% is, without doubt, the most Savage climb in all of triathlon. So savage, in fact, that all athletes are timed in their ascent for the Big Savage Challenge. How will you compare to Bjorn Andersson's record ascent of 31:30?
  • How many opportunities do you have to be permanently immortalized in triathlon history? All athletes who successully make it up the Westernport Wall cleanly will have a brick engraved with their name laid into the Wall for future Savages to ride over and fall onto!

Course Information:

The SavageMan Triathlon swim takes place in the clear, calm and clean waters of Maryland's largest inland water body, Deep Creek Lake. The swim enters and exits the lake at the Deep Creek Lake State Park public beach. The swim is an in-water wave start, and the swim entry is from the south beach. Swimmers will swim a counter-clockwise rectangular loop, keeping buoys to their right at all times and turning around at the State Park Road bridge. The SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon swim course is a 1.2 mile rectangular out-and-back course that runs parallel to the shore about 50-100 yards from land, allowing for excellent spectator access to view swimmers progress.

The SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon bike course is the crown jewel of the SavageMan Triathlon Festival. The bike course is truly beautiful as it travels on remote and scenic Garrett County roads and through Deep Creek State Park, Savage River State Forest, and New Germany State Parks. And the bike course is truly Savage as it rides alongside the scenic Savage River, scales the vaunted Westernport Wall, and summits the most savage climb in all of triathlon, Big Savage Mountain. The SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon bike course is the most beautiful and most savage triathlon bike course in the world, guaranteed.

The SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon run course is a scenic 13.1 mile double loop course that runs along the shores of Deep Creek Lake, through the expansive State Park campgrounds, and along lakeside roads. Eleven of the 13.1 miles are on paved roads with the remainder on smooth gravel roads. While not as savage as the bike course, the SavageMan 70.0 Triathlon run course is far from easy with tough hills through the campground and a challenging climb to the turnaround on the Thayerville Fire Tower Road.
