If you're looking for a flat Fall race, then sign up for the swim leg on a relay team, because that's the only flat part of the course in the Cunningham Falls Sprint triathlon! Nestled in the beautiful Catoctin Mountains in Frederick County's Thurmont, this race is not recommended for newbies, unless it's "Quads Day" on your workout calendar.

Course Information:

Athletes will enter and exit the pristine Hunting Creek Lake at the South Beach for a 750 meter wetsuit legal swim. Pack your "granny gears" for T1, as the bike course will take you down...and up....Catoctin Hollow Road, among others. Once back in the Transition Area, athletes will embark on a 5k run that encompasses the natural beauty of the Catoctins, and will run right past the Park's namesake falls. The 78-foot Cunningham Falls (known locally as McAfee Falls) is the largest cascading waterfall in Maryland, and will be a picturesque diversion before heading down the trail to the finish line near the beach area. A unique local landmark is the Catoctin Furnace, which heralded the arrival of the Industrial Revolution to the State of Maryland with its iron casting operations. It also played a crucial role in America's Revolution, forging ammunition for General Washington's Continental Army. Pay tribute to the Furnace by bringing your "iron legs" for this race...riding a steel bike is up to you.

2011 RACE UPDATE :: Triathlon Cancelled

From The event website - "We have made the difficult decision to cancel the Cunningham Falls Sprint Triathlon. Set Up Events is committed to producing safe, fun and challenging events for our athletes while striving to build the MTS into a fantastic series of triathlons across the state. With the challenging terrain of this venue and the low turnout to date, it is apparent that this will not be a long term venue for us. So, we made the difficult decision to cancel the event. All athletes registered for this event will get full refund of their entry fee and a complimentary entry into the Waterman's Sprint Triathlon on October 9. If you are already registered for this event you can roll your free entry to a 2012 MTS event. Also, in light of this cancellation, the number of races needed to qualify for MTS awards has been lowered to 3 events. We appreciate your understanding and trust that you will recognize that this decision was made in the best interest of our athletes and the MTS as a whole. "
