The Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon is a popular annual race and returns to Decatur, IL, July 9th and 10th. Since its inspriring start in 2007, the Rodney T. Miller triathlon weekend has welcomed over 3,000 athlete participants. The Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon commemorates the life and spirit of Sergeant Rodney T. Miller, a former Illinois State Police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 2006. Miller was an outstanding athlete and collegiate swimmer. Funds raised from the triathlon are awarded to area schools, nonprofit organizations and clubs. Since 2007, nearly $70,000 has been granted to area organizations from the Rodney T. Miller Memorial Fund. An adult duathlon has been added to this year's race lineup.
The opening swim is a wave start, .75 mile open water swim in Lake Decatur. Swim start is in the water. The swim is a u-shaped point to point course well defined by buoys and anchored boats. The bike ride begins at the mount line to the left of the TA exit and is a 19-mile out-and-back route on closed roads through rolling hills. Safety and support are very evident with police and volunteers along the entire course, first aid and water stations are also along the way. The bike dismount is on a long downhill with volunteers stationed to alert riders of the dismount line. The run for the Intermediate Course leaves the TA running to the athlete's right and following the lake to a turn around, then back on the lake front passing the TA and along the lake front, leaving the park running under US 36 and along Lake Shore Drive to the turn-around. Then back to the finish line in Nelson Park. Safety support and water stations are located just outside the TA, at the first turn, just beyond the US 36 underpass and at the final turn-around.
