The swim courses are adjusted each year to be "with the current" in the beautiful Rappahannock River. Water tempatures are typically in the mid to upper 70's. It has been wetsuit eligible in the past, 75-77 degrees; however, no one will know until the USAT officials take 3 readings that morning. In 2014 it was exactly 78.0 degrees and "legal". The river is tidal so there is a current; you will need to sight regularly to stay on course. There are no jellyfish or nettles. You will walk up or down the street to the start. The start point will depend on the current and tide chart. Please give yourself ample time (an extra 10 minutes) to walk down to the swim start. The road is paved, but if you do wear flip flops to the start we will have a drop bucket for you, and bring them back to the finish line area.

The swim cut-off time is 30 minutes for the sprint and 60 minutes for the olympic.
The course is on great roads through the rural area of Westmoreland and Richmond Counties. It is a rolling course with some challenging hills. Police & directional volunteers will be at all major intersections. There is no bottle handoff on the bike.
