This is a novice biathlon that welcomes skilled biathletes. There is a classic race, two lengths of skate race and a kids race. We use regulation biathlon targets and .22 open site rifles. If novices bring their own rifles, they must be racked at the range. We have loaner guns, both regulation size and youth size.
A biathlon race has a staggered start using 30 second intervals. Each racer will ski three loops and shoot twice, once prone and once standing. The target consists of five black circles which when hit, flips to white, allowing everyone to see how many shots are hit and missed.
For evrery shot missed, the racer must ski a short penalty loop. It is the time it takes to ski this loop that adjusts the time for shots missed.
