The 2026 Black Squirrel Scurry:
This will be our 9th annual event. The Black Squirrel Scurry is a triathlon that features a 2 mile paddle down the Prairie River, a 17.5 mile bike ride featuring the River Bend Trail out to the countryside of Lincoln County, and a 5k trail run through the Merrill Area Rec Complex and Council Grounds State Park. Races include Relays, divisions for 19 and Under, Tandems, and Solo Aged divisions for individuals and eBikes (nonthrottle). Proceeds from this event will be donated to the “Northwoods Veterans Post” and Friends of the River Bend Trail. Timing is provided by T & H timing Services, LLC.
Awards will follow at 1 PM at Cenotaph Park, located across the street from Ballyhoos. So, grab a lunch with your coupon while you wait for awards. For those over age 21, Ballyhoos offers the largest selection of craft beers in Merrill. Raffle to follow awards!
Course Information:
Paddle (kayak or canoe) 2 miles down the Prairie River starting at Prairie Trails Park (N2121 Co Rd K, Merrill, WI 54452). Average depth 18". No rapids but a few rocks to steer around and many shallow spots. Pull out at Stange's Park. Scout Troop 503 will assist you landing on the shore, pull you craft out of the water, and load it to your vehicle later.
Bike: 17+ miles on the road exiting town on Hwy 107 with vistas along the Wisconsin River twice and through Council Grounds State Park and the countryside north of Merrill. Bike to Run transition located at entrance to Merrill Area Rec Complex. (1100 MARC Dr, Merrill, WI 54452)
Run: 5k on grass and gravel paths (200 yards of asphalt) around the MARC complex and through Council Grounds State Park. Half of it is naturally shaded.
