2022 Sunken Island Triathlon:
We are thrilled to bring an Olympic, Sprint, and Aquabike event to the shores of our beloved Long Pond. This is a special race for the OYL crew, as co-founders Derek Savas and Jay DeLeon were raised on the pond and know just how unique the “FreeLake” area is. Their innate knowledge of the course and general area provides the race with an extra layer of scrupulousness.
Why the name, “Sunken Island”? We grew up hearing so many tales regarding this storied Long Pond landmark, which is a notorious boating hazard. The real story goes, many years ago Assawompsett Pond, which is connected to Cathedral Camp’s Long Pond via Long Pond River, was damned. This caused the water level of Long Pond to rise substantially, completely submerging what was left of a small island to the Northwest of Lewis Island, then coined Sunken Island. Today, all that remains of Sunken Island are a few rocks that peak through the surface of the water. We chose to name our race “Sunken Island” as a nod to Long Pond’s long lost and legendary island.
This Olympic distance race kicks off with a time trial start, out and back swim which will be calm and quick. Our single loop bike course then winds you around five different lakes and ponds, providing scenic pastoral views for the entire route. The fast and flat run course on tree-lined country roads (think shade!) will appeal to all athletes during this mid-summer race.
The Aquabike uses the same courses as the Triathlon but without the running leg.
