_ The 4th Annual Darkness into Vineyard Light Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk:
On Saturday, September 25th 2021 (rain date Sunday September 26th) we will gather together at the Bend in the Road on State Beach, in Edgartown for the 4nd annual Darkness into Vineyard Light Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk. The walk will begin before sunrise and continue until after daybreak. This is symbolic of coming out of the darkness of depression and mental illness, into the light of hope and healing.
Suicide rates have dramatically increased nation-wide. The suicide rate on the Cape and Islands is more than twice the state average, and suicide is now the second leading cause of death for youth ages 14-25. With this heart-wrenching statistic in mind, this year any funds raised through this event will go directly to Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force to fund programs and events for the youth and teens in our community. Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force (YTF) is a coalition of over 50 volunteer community members who work together to help children and adolescents make healthy decisions. The Youth Task Force’s mission is to reduce substance use and other risky behaviors by promoting community-wide health and wellness for youth and families through a cooperative integrated network of youth, parents, health practitioners, health and social service organizations, public officials, educators, law enforcement officers, and other community members.
DVL's mission is to raise awareness and break the silence regarding suicide. By publicly addressing suicide, we hope that individuals who are struggling with thoughts of suicide will see that there is hope and support available. It is also an opportunity to educate the loved ones of those who are in crisis on how they can help, on what services are available for a person living with mental illness and for those who love them.
There are two options for registration and sponsorship:
