_ The 2020 Reston Triathlon:

As we finalize the details for our 37th annual Reston Triathlon on September 13, 2020, we’re very excited and hope you are too. In celebration of this milestone, we have many cool things waiting for you.  Keep up the hard work so you will be raring to go on race day.

Speaking of race day, please read below for some important race information.

Packet Pickup

Date:               Saturday, September 12th – 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Location:        West entrance of South Lakes High School, 11400 South Lakes Drive, Reston, VA 20191, at the covered area at the above the track and football field.

You must pick up your packet in person and you must have a photo ID. You need to pick up your packet containing your race numbers, other pre-race information and your race premiums (swag). Substitutions are not allowed-athletes involved in substitution will be permanently banned from the Reston Triathlon and reported to USA Triathlon.

Included in your packet will be a wave specific color coded swim cap, a large plastic bag, race bib, bike number and two small stickers with your race number.  One sticker is for your bicycle helmet.  The other is for the plastic bag, which you will use to put your swim gear in, after the swim portion of the triathlon.  Please be sure the sticker is securely affixed to the mid-section of the bag so our volunteers can sort them for pick up.

If you cannot pick up your packet between 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7th, you must notify us in advance by e-mail at [email protected] or snail mail to 2104 Owls Cove Ln. Reston, VA 20191. Any exceptions must be approved in advance prior to packet pickup.

There will be no race day packet pickup!!

Since the Reston Triathlon is an event sanctioned by USA TRIATHLON you must bring your membership card along with a photo ID to packet pickup. Those who elect to use the one day membership, but have not paid for it, must pay the $15 fee at pickup – cash or check only!  Athletes, who cannot verify their annual USA Triathlon membership, must also pay the one day membership fee.

Chip timing will be used for this race. .

Race Day Information – Race Cut Off Times

Please be aware of race cut off times for this year’s race.  In fairness to our civilian, Fire and Police volunteers, we cannot allow you to continue the race course if you do not make all of the various cut off times.

The swim course will close one hour after the last wave enters the water. (That means you have one hour to complete the swim portion of the course).

The bicycle course will close two hours and forty-five minutes after the last swim wave enters the water. (That means you have one hour and forty-five minutes to complete the bicycle portion of the course).

The run course will close 4 hours and fifteen minutes after the start of the last swim heat.  (That means you have one and a half hours to complete the run portion of the course).

So, if our math is correct, you must complete the triathlon within four hours and fifteen minutes.
Race Day Logistics

Race Start:     In order to reduce traffic congestion on the thoroughfares of Reston, and to get the bikes off the roads earlier in the day, the 2018 Triathlon will start promptly at 7:05 am at Lake Audubon on Twin Branches Road.

Parking:

There will be no parking on race day at the Lake.  So, you must park your vehicle in the parking lots at South Lakes High School located on South Lakes Drive at the Langston Hughes Middle School lot or Ridge Heights Road. Any vehicles parked on Twin Branches will be towed.

Race Day Set Up:

There are two transition areas.  T1 will be at the Lake.  T2 will be at the high school.

Step 1.  Arrive at South Lakes High School and set up your bike/run transition gear (T2) at the high school.

Step 2.  Ride your bike to the lake, approximately one mile, wearing your bike helmet.   You will be body marked at the Lake, and you will pick up your chip at the Lake on race morning.   Set up your T1 area.

All athletes should plan to be at the lake and ready to swim no later than 6:30 am. A small headlight/lamp is a good idea as it will be dark when riding to the lake.

After completing the swim portion of the triathlon, you will exit the Lake and change into your bike gear.  Place all of your swim gear into the bag that was provided to you at packet pick up.  Please make sure the outside of your bag is identified with your race number!  Our wonderful volunteers will transport your swim gear to the T2 area where you can pick it up after the race.

            Training

The maps of the course is on our Website – www.restontriathlon.org Please review it before the race.

Swim – please remember that swimming in the Reston lakes is prohibited except during the race.

Bike –   Please review the course carefully and become familiar with it. The bike course is 3 laps. The first 2 laps are exactly the same. The 3rd lap continues on South Lakes Drive past the high school, then turns left onto SeaHawk Drive, two more left turns, until the finish at the high school. Athletes who train on the course are urged to train safely and to follow the rules of the road just as if they were motorists.

Run – the run is on shaded Reston pathways. It starts at the transition area next to the high school tennis courts and ends in the stadium. The run course will be marked with lime this year.  Follow the white line markings and you won’t get lost.  Hopefully.

            Rules and Regulations

This is a USA Triathlon Sanctioned event, therefore official USA TRIATHLON rules will be enforced. It is the responsibility of each and every triathlete to know the rules and to know the course.

No drafting or blocking is permitted.

Please stay to the right on the bike course except to pass while staying within the cones at all times.

If you do not complete all 3 loops of the bike course, you will be disqualified. The decision of the race directors is final.

            Bike Helmets

Please be sure your bicycle helmet is compliant with USA TRIATHLON requirements. The Snell Memorial Foundation, Inc. recommends that bicycle helmets be replaced after five (5) years or less if the manufacturer so recommends. Bell Sports recommends that helmets be evaluated after three (3) years.

            Questions and Answers

Course talks, which include a complete review of all the aspects of the event, will be given at packet pickup at the listed times (11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m) will be given by a race director. A question and answer period will follow each talk.

Volunteers

The success of any race of this caliber depends on the volunteers who help with this event. The Reston Triathlon requires over 400 volunteers to work on race day. We need volunteers for packet pick up, on Saturday, September 12th, and on race day – transition areas (swim/bike at Lake Audubon Boat ramp, and bike/run at South Lakes HS), water stops, run sentry, bike marshals, post race food, scorer, and finish line. If you live on             Lake Audubon have a boat, you could help us with the swim part of the race.

If you have any family members, friends, neighbors, or co-workers who might be willing to work during the race – please go to our website – www.restontriathlon.org – and click on the volunteer tab at the left, or send email to [email protected].

Volunteers receive the following:
