_ The 2020 Lake in the Hills Triathlon:

This local event is great for beginners and elite athletes. The course consists of a 0.5 mile open water swim, 15.5 mile bike with rolling hills and a 4.0 mile run with rolling hills for a total distance of 20.0 miles.

Course Information:

Triathlon Course

This is a point-to-point event. To minimize crossing Randall Road, the race consists of two transition areas: one east of Randall Road and one west of Randall Road. So, once you leave T1 from the beach, you will not return to that area. The finish will be near T2. Please follow the directions and you’ll definitely have all of your things in the right place.

Swim Course (0.5 mile)

The starting point for the open water swim in Woods Creek Lake is at Indian Trail Beach. An elite wave start will begin at 6:30 a.m. followed by a time-trial start for all age group participants. In the time-trial start, two swimmers will leave the shore line every 3 seconds. The order of the time-trial start will be first-come, first serve. The swim course will be guarded by American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards.

The average water temperature of Woods Creek Lake in June is 65 degrees. Wetsuits are optional for all swimmers. The water quality is tested by the McHenry County Health Department. In the event of unsafe E-coli counts, the swim will be cancelled and the race will commence as a duathlon with a time-trial bike start.

T1

Transition 1 (T1) will be staged in the Indian Trail Beach parking lot. Each participant will be assigned a position on the bike racks to store their bike and gear for the bike portion of the race. A numbered swim gear bag will be provided to each participant corresponding to their race number. Prior to leaving T1 for the bike portion of the race, each participant is responsible for placing all personal belongings in the numbered swim gear bag. Participants will not be returning to T1 upon finishing the race. These bags will be moved to the finish area by event staff and made available to athletes after the race. Athletes must have helmets on and buckled prior to leaving T1. Bikes may not be mounted until out of the transition area.

Bike Course (15.5 miles)

The bike course will be an out-and-back route which primarily goes west on Miller Road, north on Haligus Road, and then back to T2. Roads are rolling with a few steep hills. Ride on the right and pass on the left. For the safety of all riders, drafting is prohibited and self-patrolling is recommended. All athletes are required to wear an approved helmet throughout all points of the biking portion. The roads will be policed; however, traffic will be allowed on the course. Please be cautious of traffic.

See map of bike course.

T2

Transition 2 (T2) will be staged in the parking lot of Ken Carpenter Park. Each participant will be assigned a space along the bike racks for their running gear. Athletes must dismount their bike 5 feet prior to entering the transition area.

Run Course (4.0 miles)

The run course is through residential streets and a scenic bike path. There will be three water stops on the course.
