_ The 2019 Pedal the Prairie Bike Tour:
Description
Join the Forest Preserve District of Will County and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie on an educational bike ride on the Wauponsee Glacial Trail and the beautiful Bailey Bridge Trail on the way to Midewin?s Iron Bridge. Forest Preserve staff and volunteers will lead the tour from Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet, pointing out fun and interesting items along the way. Once the ride reaches the Bailey Bridge Trailhead connection, the group will head west through Midewin en route to the Iron Bridge Trailhead. Staff from Midewin will be there celebrating the 75th birthday of Smokey Bear. Historic prints from Smokey Bear artist Rudy Wendelin as well as other vintage films, photos and posters for Smokey Bear will be on display. Bike tour participants will return to Sugar Creek Administration Center unguided and at their own pace along the same path.
The total distance of the ride is 31.5 miles from start to finish along a multi-surface trail, not suitable for road bikes or other thin-tired bicycles. This program is part of the Illinois Route 66 Red Carpet Corridor Festival, a day-long celebration sponsored by the 13 communities which make up the 90-mile linear museum from Joliet to Towanda.
