The New Bare Hill Triathlon and Duathlon takes place in the picturesque New England setting of Harvard, Massachusetts, centrally located in the state, 50 minutes outside Boston and easily accessible from I-495 and Route 2.

Following six consecutive years of the Bare Hill Triathlon, we asked the racers how we can improve the experience in 2019.  The racers spoke, we listened and are happy to share the highlights of the NEW Bare Hill Triathlon and Duathlon races:

  • Swim shortened to .3 mi
  • Separate swim wave for beginners
  • New run-bike-run duathlon alternative
  • Lower cost entry fee
  • New race management

Our atmosphere is very local with easy access to the event starting and finishing on the lawn of Harvard’s historic library. The course follows rolling hills along country roads dotted with apple orchards in the charming town of Harvard. You will be surrounded by spectacular views of the MA & NH mountains. As a competitive athlete, you will race head to head with some of New England's top age group triathletes who will help push you to compete at the highest level.

As a first time athlete you will enjoy the scenery, encouragement from the 50+ Lions volunteers, and the satisfaction of accomplishing one of New England’s premiere sprint triathlons or our NEW duathlon.

The Harvard Lions Club would like to thank all athletes for their participation as all proceeds benefit the Harvard Lions Club charities.

Course Information:

TRIATHLON: Swim Course (.3 mi)

Harvard's Bare Hill Pond beach makes for an easy, knee deep, sandy start for the triathlon.  Water is generally calm and the water temperature in mid June is expected to be in the low 70's.  The course is triangular and athletes will be supported by local lifeguards. Swim waves based on gender and an additional wave for anyone who needs a little more space to feel comfortable in open water swimming.  For those who prefer to change into shoes for the 1/4 mi uphill run up to T1, an area will be marked off at the beach parking lot for footwear.

Bike Course (10.4 mi)

The single loop bike course starts with an initial uphill, passing apple orchards and horse farms into the town of Bolton. Athletes will make their way along rolling hills to Harvard's most popular road for biking, Prospect Hill. Enjoy breathtaking views from the top of the hill and the Fruitlands Museum vista, the historic homesite of the Alcott family, before returning to the center of town. Road marshals will be placed at all turns. Return to the transition area for the run.

Run Course (3.1 mi)

After leaving the transition area, you will run along shaded roads near Bare Hill Pond on a combination of dirt and pavement.  The gently rolling course is well marshaled and has multiple water stops before you finish in front of Harvard's historic library.

Duathlon:

First run (1.5 mi trail run)

Starting in front of Harvard's historic library, follow the Bromfield school driveway to the Barba Point trail behind the tennis courts.  After a short downhill you will cross a rock wall and enter a relatively flat wide trail which will accommodate runners in both directions. Runners will run along a peninsula and make their way to the pond where they will catch a glimpse of the swimmers doing the triathlon and then turn around and head back to the school driveway.  There is a nice .25 mile fast downhill finish to the bike transition on the lawn of the library where you will transition to your bike and together with the triathletes conquer the same bike route and final run leg. See course descriptions above for bike and run segments.
