We set out to create an event that was unique, offered breathtaking views and, most importantly, provided a challenge. The Cascade Locks Triathlon/Duathlon/Relay includes all that and more. There is nothing traditional about this race, from the start to the finish. With a jumpstart off the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, participants swim with the current to Marine Park on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.

From the transition area, cyclists make their way towards Wyeth Campground along Herman Creek Road for an out and back, or double loop for the long course. Our bike section might be a shorter distance (this year due to highway construction), but the long course offers roughly 2600 feet of elevation gain and will definitely challenge the legs.

Finish with a run along the Columbia River Historic Highway State Trail.  With an out and back loop that offers rolling hills and views the entire stretch, it offers a perfect finish.  Views of the majestic Columbia River and its etching across the foothills, the impressive Bridge of the Gods and the Bonneville Dam, a National Historic Landmark, there’s lots to take in along the run.

We wanted to offer an event that was not only challenging, but memorable and Cascade Locks Triathlon delivers. Also called ‘The Heart of the Gorge,’ Cascade Locks includes stunning views, a rich history and some serious climbs, plenty of reasons to break from tradition and start a new one with the Cascade Locks Triathlon/Duathlon/Relay.

Course Information:

Swim

One of the most unique features of this event is the jump-off start from the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler – a truly amazing experience. Participants will swim Southwest (with the current) and exit the water at Marine Park. Fun fact: Oregon’s most famous pioneers – Lewis and Clark – stood at the shores of Cascade Locks and marveled at this stretch of the mighty Columbia River.

Bike

Our bike course for 2019 will take riders from Marine Park to Wyeth Campground, via Herman Creek Rd. Participants exit Marine Park under a well-known tunnel which likely will have trains passing overhead. A short trip out of Cascade Locks and riders will start an ascent of 600 feet filled with lush pacific northwest beauty. Long Course riders have a second “loop”, with a total elevation gain of over 2600 ft!. We know this bike distance is relatively short compared to other races, but with sections of the Historic Highway under construction, this is our reality. In future years we hope to extend the bike portion all the way to Hood River! Click here for course map.

Run

For those not from Oregon, The Gorge is one of our most prized possessions. We are so lucky (and excited!) that the Columbia River Historic Highway State Trail has reopened (from the Eagle Creek Fire of 2017) and will be our location for the run. This course is absolutely breathtaking- filled with waterfalls, views of the Columbia River, and hills that guarantee some burning in the quads! Both the Long and Short course triathlons/Duathlons will be out-and-back. Click here for course map.

Transition

This event will have one transition (Swim-Bike & Bike-Run) at Marine Park.

Directions:

It’s an easy drive from PDX airport to Cascade Locks. Approximately 40.3 miles west from the airport, expect a 45 minute drive. Though it takes about 45 minutes to get there from Portland, it won’t feel like it with views of Multnomah Falls, Crown Vista House and the Columbia River, the drive goes fast.

From the airport to Marine Park
Get on I-205 South for 3.1 miles.
Follow I-84 to Cascade Locks for 36.4 miles and take Exit 44.
Continue on Cascade Locks Highway/US 30/Wa Na Pa St. for .7 miles
Turn left at SW Portage rd.
Arrive at Marine Park.
