Travel and Leisure Magazine has referred to picturesque Sachuest Beach (AKA Second Beach) in Middletown as “Newport’s best-loved summer hang-out spot”. After more than a decade of living on Aquidneck Island, we couldn’t agree more. Our Olympic race begins with a .9 mile swim (.5 mile for the Sprint) in the beautiful open waters of Sachuest Bay. A few steps from the water’s edge, just across the sandy shoreline, you will find the transition area. The two-loop bike course (single loop for the Sprint) will wind you through bucolic Middletown and Portsmouth, past both farm lands and stunning Sakonnet River front estates. Finally, the paved two-loop run course (one loop for Sprint) takes you out to the oceanfront Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge area. Continue on as the route runs alongside the Norman Bird Sanctuary and then bears right through the Third Beach area. The run and concludes back at Second Beach and After you finish, you’ll be met with a spread fit for a hungry triathlete.
