Each year on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend, the Friends of the Hot Springs Public Library hosts the Southern Hills Triathlon. This activity is one of the major fund raising events for the Friends. With the proceeds from this activity the Friends are able to purchase books and computers as well as support many of the library's activities. The race is held at Angostura State Recreation Area (map) south of Hot Springs off US Hwy 385. Angostura State Rec Area does charge an entrance fee that participants and spectators will need to have or purchase to enter the park. |
Course Information:
• The Southern Hills 21st Annual Triathlon is within one of South Dakota's most scenic state parks.
• The swimming part of the races are in Angostura Lake.
• The bike route is along back roads between Angostura and the small town of Oral, SD. The run is along the lakeside.

• This is a relaxing natural area and a fun place for a race. The Recreation Area is a water-lover's haven with breathtaking scenic views. It offers crystal clear waters and some of the finest sandy beaches in the state. Racers could spend the rest of day enjoying the many water sports and summer fun activities - camping, boating, fishing, and swimming.
Directions:
Angostura State Recreation Area is located 10 miles south of Hot Springs, SD off US Hwy 385. The park is located about 55 miles south of Rapid City, SD and 50 miles north of Chadron, NE.
To get to Angostura State Recreation area follow US Hwy 385 10 miles south from Hot Springs, SD. Turn right (west) onto County Hwy 1A going 5.4 miles to the park entrance.
From Rapid City, SD follow Hwy 79 south to US Hwy 385 south toward Chadron, NE. Turn right (west) onto County Hwy 1A going 5.4 miles to the park entrance. The Park is well marked off US Hwy 385.
