_ 2018 Xterra Knoxville Off Road Triathlon:

The XTERRA Points Series moves to Knoxville, TN to bring one of the toughest and most exciting triathlons on the circuit. This race is part of the XTERRA Southeast Region and is an XTERRA USA Championship Qualifier.

Only two miles from downtown, Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness presents a unique urban playground for mountain bikers and trail runners alike. Winding through the Urban Wilderness, participants will encounter plenty of rocks, roots, and climbing to test their grit. XTERRA Knoxville will take participants through five parks, featuring the old quarries and hills of East Tennessee with a perfect balance of neighborhood backyard feel.

Course Information:

Swim: 1200 Meters (0.75 miles)

The swim will be held from the water at Mead’s Quarry held as a mass start. Swimmers will navigate a one lap, clockwise loop around the perimeter of the quarry before exiting for transition. The shoreline will be covered with matting to allow for a safe and quick exit from the water. A shoe drop will be available for the short, but rocky, run up to transition.

It is mandatory that athletes wear swim caps during the entire duration of the swim. You will be given a swim cap at packet pick up.

XTERRA follows the International Triathlon Union (ITU) wetsuit rules.

Previous year’s average surface temperature was above 72′. (Not Wetsuit Legal)

Bike: 16.6 Miles

The course will explore some of the best single track trails that Knoxville has to offer. The bike course starts from the gravel parking lot at Mead’s Quarry and heads down the paved trail for nearly a half mile before funneling down into single track trails. Winding through the Urban Wilderness, riders will encounter plenty of rocks, roots, and climbing to test their grit. The bike course will take participants through five parks, featuring the old quarries and hills of East Tennessee with a perfect balance of neighborhood backyard feel. There are plenty of opportunities to pass other bikers throughout the bike leg. There are 5 road crossings along the bike course that will will be monitored for the safety of the riders. There is also a brief segment of road riding after the bike aid station (Anderson School).

Run - 4.6 Miles

The 4.6 mile course takes a stroll out of the quarry and into the wooded forests of South Knoxville and progressively gets tougher. Rolling hills give way to rocky ascents before ending with a punishing climb around Mead’s Quarry. The views around the quarry are amazing, but you have to earn it first. This is also the run course for XTERRA Knoxville 4.6 mile trail race.
