_ The 2018 Gateway Triathlon:

Carlyle, Illinois is considered the gateway to the Gateway of St Louis, MO, located about 45 minutes east of the Gateway City.  It is also home to Illinois’ biggest lake, an Army Corps. of Engineers man-made lake, which is just perfect for the season opening race.

Perfect for the swim discipline that parallels the dam, so hundreds of spectators can watch. Perfect for the fast, flat out and back bike course on lightly traveled roads. Perfect for an out and back run course closed to traffic with a mile stretch on the dam, so those same spectators can watch the event unfold a mile into the run discipline and the final mile stretch. Finally, it is perfect for its post race snack tent, awards and the date it is hosted on.

Course Information:

This course has remained unchanged for years. Athletes return year after year because it is truly a great course and a perfect test before the season really kicks in. The swim is along the dam so friends, family and spectators can watch the athletes as they navigate the straight out and back buoys.

The bike course is a fast and flat out and back course. Sprint athletes have a pancake flat course, Olympic athletes get one nice climb, just to keep everyone honest out there. It is a quick out of your seat heart pounder, but only about 50m long.

The run course is one of our favorite, though it has very little shade. It is one mile across the dam, then a nice little hill to the sprint turnaround, and back. Olympic distance athletes keep going to their 5000m turnaround point out past the next dam. The whole run is basically along the lake. When you reach the return dam and start to hear the music, you can hit the turbo button to get to the finish line right inside the park.
