One in five adults in the U.S. are functionally illiterate. They struggle with daily life tasks such as reading prescription labels, grocery labels, street signs, and other written material. This can be a huge barrier to their health and well being, and it can limit their opportunities in life. Higher literacy levels lead to better job opportunities, lower poverty levels, lower crime levels, and to greater academic success in all areas for both parents and their children.
At OFLP, we strive to empower individuals and improve communities through literacy. We know that when we help a person learn to read and write, or to speak English, that more than one life is changed. Education is key to overpowering the cycle of poverty, so all of our services are provided free of charge.
The proceeds from this event go toward necessary supplies and expenses for our students. Through fundraisers and generous donations from folks like you, we keep our doors open and services free to all those in need.
If you know anyone who would like to learn to read or speak English, have them call us at 870-793-5912. Tutoring is flexible, and no previous experience is required. If you have two or three hours a week and would like to change a life, you can call the number above or email us at [email protected]. Thank you!
