Angry Owl 12 Hour
The first annual Angry Owl is the inaugural Crusty Cap race, and it's going to be a fun one! This has been in the works since early 2016, and I am excited to share it with you.

WHAT: 12 or 6 hour endurance run over a one mile loop. Think of an elementary school jog-a-thon for grown ups (snacks included).

WHEN: Sunday, July 30, 2017
12 hour run begins at 6:00 am and concludes at 6:00 pm
6 hour run has the option to begin at either 6:00 am or noon and finishes at either noon or 6:00 pm.
Awards will be presented around 6:15 pm

WHERE: Bush's Pasture Park, Salem, Oregon. Start/Finish/Race Headquarters will be on the derby track behind the stadium easily accessible from the parking lot off of Mission Street.

AID STATION: We will have a single aid station near the Start/Finish area stocked with water, electrolyte drink, fruits, salty snacks, sweet snacks, and some other goodies. You are welcome to leave some of your own foods near the finish line for easy access as you're running.

COURSE: The course is just over a mile round trip. It's lowest point is at 157 feet elevation and maxes out at 170 feet. The loop has a combination of hard packed dirt, well-maintained non-technical trail, grass, packed gravel, and a bit of asphalt. You will run on the derby track, past the stadium, through a wooded area next to Mill Creek, around a softball field, and back around the stadium. It will be well marked, and you will surely get the hang of it after a few loops. See course map on website.

SHIRTS: None will be available.

FINISHER MEDALS: Each participant will be giving a medal rather than receiving one. Crusty Cap partners with a friend who puts on an annual race for Tarahumara children in the Copper Canyons of Mexico. A portion of each entry fee will go directly to this cause and we will also accept donations of medals from other races for this cause.

CAPS: Finishers will receive a custom event cap, and we expect to see them crusty at future events! Some additional caps may be available to purchase, but quantities will be limited.

AWARDS: Awards will be given to the top female and male runners in each race. If there is a tie in distance, the runner who completed the distance first will be awarded the higher place. Runners who complete the 6-hour run ending at noon will have to wait or come back at 6:00 pm to see how they place against the other 6 hour runners. Also, this year's winners will have the added bonus of holding the course record!

WHAT’S WITH THE NAME? Owls at Salem's Bush's Pasture Park gained national attention by attacking a few runners and taking a few hats. Don't worry, those attacked suffered no more than a few scratches or a missing hat. It became a fun talking point when MSNBC Reporter Rachel Maddow held a competition to design a sign warning park goers of the owl. Now, the signs are posted and locals and internet observers alike have had fun with the image and have even given the owl a name!
