 _ 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 Superfrog Triathlon:

IRONMAN 70.3 SUPERFROG serves as a charity fundraising race: $200 of each general entry will be a tax deductible donation to the IRONMAN Foundation. The donation portion of this entry will be used to support military and local charities including: the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Optimists Club of Coronado and the Islander Sports Foundation.

The original and longest running half-distance race, the SUPERFROG Triathlon was founded in 1979. The challenging course was designed by a group of Navy Seals stationed at the US Navy Seals center in Coronado to both prepare them for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and to enhance their training.

For 2016, the race will move to Imperial Beach, just a few miles from its original spot, where it will begin with a two-loop 1.2-mile swim in the open Pacific Ocean. Athletes will then embark on a four-loop, 56-mile bike course that travels along the beach community of Imperial Beach and scenic Highway 75. The course is flat and spectator-friendly along with beautiful ocean views.

The four-loop, 13.1-mile run reflects the beach running that SEALs do in training. Over half the course will include sand with aid stations along the way and at the southern point, a view of the Tijuana Hills. An energetic finish line awaits athletes as they round the iconic "Imperial Beach" sculptor to finish on the beginning of the pier.

Course Information:

The 1.2 mile swim is a two loop swim with a 100 meter run in between loops. The course is rectangular shaped, and athletes will keep buoys on their right and lifeguards on their left. There are two red turn buoys and athletes can use lifeguards to spot these as surf can kick up and buoys can be hard to see. After the first loop, athletes will exit the surf onto the beach and run back to swim start for the second loop. Once exiting from the second loop, athletes will head under the pier to get to transition.

The bike course is a four loop course that is relatively at sea level. Athletes will head south out of transition to Imperial Beach Blvd. and turn around at Mar Vista High School. They will return to Seacoast Drive along the beach community of Imperial Beach to Palm Ave. and Rainbow onto the Silver Strand, Hwy 75. There is a turnaround at Fiddler’s Cove after which athletes will return towards transition and repeat the loop three more times.

The four-loop, 13.1-mile run reflects the beach running that SEALs do in training. Exiting south of transition you’ll head onto the beach to Imperial Beach Blvd beach access transitioning to the east sidewalk of Seacoast Drive. You’ll head down to the southernmost end of Seacoast then transfer onto the sand for a ¼ mile run in view of the Tijuana Hills where you will turn around to head north. Then be prepared to run the beach, under the Pier, up to Palm Avenue beach access up north on Seacoast to Carnation turning around just before Silver Strand Blvd to follow Seacoast. Then turning back south onto the beach near the pier to repeat three more times before entering an energetic finish line that awaits athletes as they round the iconic “Imperial Beach” sculptor to finish on the beginning of the pier.
